From 1984 To 1988

Former Real Madrid coach Miguel Munoz, who had brought temporarily to Spain in 1969, he returned to coach the national team. Spain was in the Euro 84 qualifying Group 7, against the Netherlands, Ireland, Iceland and Malta. The semifinals saw Spain and Denmark, set at 1-1 after extra time before Spain has done to win the shootout 5-4 on penalties. The hosts and tournament favorites France beat Spain 2-0 in the final after a goalless first half.

Spain qualified for the World Cup in Mexico in 1986 led the group 7 with Scotland, Wales and Iceland. Spain began the group stage, losing 1-0 to Brazil, but grew after beating Northern Ireland 2-1 and Algeria 3-0. Round 2 paired Spain with Denmark, who won 5-1 with Emilio Butragueno scored four goals, but a 1-1 draw in the quarterfinals of Belgium Belgium ended 5-4 win on penalties.

Muñoz was retained as coach of Euro 88 As in many previous tournaments Spain qualified impressively in Austria, Romania and Albania. Spain has been withdrawn from the group and started the victory of the tournament 3-2 in Denmark, but were eliminated in the group stage after losing 1-0 and 2-0 to Italy and West Germany.
