The President of the Spanish Football Federation, Angel María Villar risk of conflict with the clubs in the country, after announcing on Tuesday that the Spanish team wants to participate in the Copa America this summer.
The world champions have been invited to participate in the competition that takes place between July 24 and one in Argentina.
"We received an offer to play in the Copa America," Villar confirmed on a visit to Catalonia. In Spain last minute invitation came in the wake of Japan, who had been invited, the withdrawal by the earthquake that devastated the land the country in March.
Spain has close ties with Latin America because of the colonial past and common language, shared with countries like Argentina, Uruguay, Peru and Chile, among others.
"We have been invited on several occasions and it is something that the Spanish football owes to South America," said Villar.
"I am in favor of Spain to participate in the tournament, is something we have to look with affection, given the large number of South American greats who played in Spain. I consider it an honor to be invited and I will take the proposal of our government, "he said.
Villar may be advantageous to the Spanish national team in South America, but his proposal would meet with resistance from Spanish clubs who would be concerned about their key players are at risk of burnout.
